Swarm Combat example query

Post by Kveldulf »

My apologies if this question has been posted in the wrong place. On p.275 of Children of Eriu, the swarm combat example for the Kraken gives damage as 5 (1 base + 3DF +1 Trait match), but the DF for Kraken is 2 DF. AM I missing something or is this a misprint? I saw the same example in Creatures book as well. Any help is appreciated.

I see what you're saying: In both places (CoE main book and in CfFT&M) the example says a DF of 3, but the "Razors" number box above only shows a 2. My guess is that it's a typo, but I can't say which is correct. It could also be that the different number is reference to the kraken stats from another book or text, and accidentally got mixed in.

My impression when I read through that area of the rules was that it was meant to show more of how a swarm might be applied, and less to give the stats in an authoritative manner. You could probably use either number and it wouldn't cause any harm.

Personally, I've never tried to use the kraken swarm stats. I prefer a kraken that should be fled from unless the party verges on the level of super-heroic. I'd rather use the kraken stats from CfFT&M page 248 (choosing one of the tougher variants) and focus attacks on their boat. :) Make it a fight about escaping a mythic force of nature, and not so much a stand-up fight. But that's just my take on it.

JRW is correct, the example was for Swarm rules purposes and communicating how that works. The number variation can be attributed as a "typo" but doesn't diminish the mission of the example. Thanks for asking! :)
