Quick question ---
In the examples in the book, the starting characters are unable to choose any of the darkened powers/skills on the edge of the Archetype charts when assigning runes/essence.
There is no explanation for this -- is this just at character creation?
It doesn't seem to note how the connecting to another Archetype works. When you reach that square in the Archetype, does it overlap the same square on the other Archetype's chart, thus 'spending' a single essence to connect the two, or does it connect to the center point of the other Archetype?

Re: Archetype Active/Passive/Skill Question -- Greyed Area around Chart
Hi, welcome to the boards!
The answer is the same in both books, Core Rolebook and Children of Eriu, just found in different places. Basically it's a set of powers unlocked by increasing your player/Disir level from 0 to 1 by achieving a success in your afterlife Wyrd.
If this is for the Children of Eriu book: page 205
For a pagan Celt, the presence of an Ancestor Spirit grants
access to the coloured outer ring of the Talent/Passive
boards. An Ancestor Spirit accompanies the Dweller but
cannot be seen nor heard except on rare occasions by the
especially magically astute. An Ancestor Spirit cannot affect
the mortal world
If this question is for the Core Rulebook: page 135
As you are a hero of great renown, a Fylgia (a non-corporeal and pure guardian spirit)
has attached itself to you. The Fylgia is the opposite gender from you, and holds
tremendous affinity for you. It acts upon this world through you, and is your
advisor and tutor.
Requirement: 1 or more dwellers in the heavens
Cost to Buy: 1 level
Benefi ts: Access to the archetype’s
outer ring of power
and skills (gray)
If you get your rune bindings all the way into one of the corners, and you bind the corner of any board, then you take that rune and rebind it starting out on another archetype's board (what you would call "multi-classing" in other RPGs).
Does that clear things up?

Okay cool. I saw the Fylgia note, but didn't think it was the main method. that makes sense, especially on the multiclassing aspect.
Sooo, a Fylgia is only added at character creation when making a new character and having a previous one as a Disir or dead character in the heavens, or is it something that can be gained through gameplay?
As an aside, there are many references to spirits.
I see that Vaettir are nature spirits, like the one being appeased in the example Saga in the core book, but the other spirits such as those summoned with Seith magic, are they all spirits of people who didn't make it into the heavens?

Re: Archetype Active/Passive/Skill Question -- Greyed Area around Chart
The only way to get to the grey outer ring is via the Disir levels, so encourage your players to epic and memorable play!
Disir spirits are ancestral family souls. Vaettir are land spirits. Lost Souls are spirits who did not ascend to Valhalla, nor have taken the lonely long journey to Niflheim - due to a curse or some unresolved geas in life. Seithkonas can see and harness Lost Souls. Some Lost Souls can master their new state and ascend to become Wight Sovereigns (see Denizens of the North), rivaling the power and hunger of Valkyries.
