A New Edition

FotN:R is the latest edition? I was wondering how long it has been out and if a new edition is in the works.

Welcome! No there's no new edition in the works. What we have been doing since the Core Rulebook is slowly refining the ruleset with each big book release. The world lore has also been evolving with each book, saga and novel being released, as a result, everything post 2012 is the latest and greatest out there. The first books in the Fate of the Norns: Ragnarok cycle are the Core Rulebook and Fafnir's Treasure. The latest book to be released is the Children of Eriu, where we expand the universe into the western Celtic kingdoms and pantheon. The rules also get a new polish in the book and appear twice, once in Creatures from Fairy-Tale and Myth: FOTN edition and again in Children of Eriu. We have many more books and games in the pipeline before we even have thoughts of a new edition, so feel free to take the plunge knowing that the content is here to stay (and grow) for many more years to come. In fact my approach to design has been to design micro-increments to the system evolution over time, ensuring that everything is always backwards compatible, but we never stagnate and rather remain in a state of perpetual evolution.

So, if I just have the FotN:R core rules, I'd not have the latest tweaks, I'd have to buy CfFT&M?

Yup, CfFT&M contains the latest updated Runic Game System (RGS). This includes the incremental changes that came with Denizens of the North and Lords of the Ash. Again everything is backwards compatible, so you can play CRB rules as written side by side with archetypes and denizens from Lords of the Ash or Children of Eriu.

For the latest updated rules you need CfFT&M. But, you also need FotN:R for the main background and rules that are not covered in CfFT&M.

Or, I could buy Children of Eriu which consolidates the latest updated rules.

CfFT&M is a "monster manual" of pre-generated creatures ready to hit your game table. These creatures feature new abilities such as social combat powers. As a result of them using the latest and greatest feature-set, we include the latest updated rules. However the rules do not include dweller creation, archetypes, nor exhaustive power lists.

I think I saw your posts on RPG.net and will head over there to drop my $0.02 into the convo, but to sum it up:
- the RGS2 Viking ecosystem of books is forward compatible with the RGS3 Celtic universe (think of DotN as v.2.1 and LotA as v.2.5 and CfFT&M as v.2.9)
- CfFT&M is the bridge book that shows you how both worlds and mechanics (where they slightly diverge such as metas for skills) work well together at the same game table
- Children of Eriu is the the first of the big books that will always have the rules printed within, allowing players to jump into the FOTN game world from any big book or boxed set in the future (I'm looking at you upcoming Ath-Cliath).
