Updates

Post by andrew »

I'll keep this thread for DotN updates. The book was originally supposed to be only 30 pages or so, but has ballooned into a massive manuscript (200+ pages). Ideally we're aiming to have it about the same size as Fafnir's Treasure, which means that a bunch of stuff needs to be de-scoped into future books. So far the table of contents will have RGS Prime, many key personas (mortal and divine), many magic items, more mysterious and action packed locales, more fearsome denizens, at least 1 new player archetype, more active and passive powers, and a stand alone saga that is geared for level 11's.

We may fit in 2 more playable archetypes but that remains to be seen based on test play. We're also in proof reading mode for the stuff that's nailed down.

The de-scoped stuff is going into 3 working manuscripts:
- The Second Age: A trilogy of sagas that has about 3 dozen quest lines all over Midgard and the outer realms (taking players from level 12 to 30)
- Gods and Giants: A source book about the divinities as well as the Godi playable archetype
- War of Shadow: Book on the alfar and the hidden war (reversible rune rules)

2013/11/15 - Test play continues

2013/12/01 - Content final: Proofing of the text in progress (a lot of iterations needed)

2013/12/12 - Blacksmith beta is complete; This player archetype will be included in the book!

2014/01/08 - Proofing complete, now applying all of the corrections to the manuscript

2014/01/10 - Dozen readers going over the manuscript for final read-through (I hate having erratas!)

2014/02/10 - Editing and proofing is probably the longest part of the job- DONE! Prepping files for backer PDFs and upcoming Kickstarter

2014/02/19 - Unfortunately little to no progress (time has been consumed by the Gulveig release) Promising the release before end of month!

2014/02/21 - And it's LIVE for our Kickstarter backers! :)

2014/03/04 - March break this week, kids crawling all over the home office! ;) Also bookend weekends with conventions (Geek Market, Genericon, Toronto Comicon). Fear not, KS coming soon! :)

2014/03/12 - KS Project submitted for approval! Video was updated with some amazing art that came in this week.

2014/03/14 - DENIZENS OF THE NORTH IS LIVE!!! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/av ... -the-north

The DotN Kickstarter will be coming soon! It'll be great to secure a budget for new artwork, editing and proper print layout. Stay tuned! :)

Have you considered to publish smaller PDF-supplement with the stuff that gets cut for other supplements?
Crafty Games have had a lot of success with their Call to Arms-series for FantasyCraft.

... And just why would we need reversed runes rules?
A bit confused, but looking forward to all of these supplements.

I am thoroughly excited for this! I've been looking forward to the Denizens of the North sourcebook, but now I have other ones to look forward to as well. Patience is rough, but I love that you're giving updates. Thank you!

DotN is looking great, a lot of new usable content for both players and the Norn. I reported a few bugs this month, but it's cleaning up nicely. I think the biggest argument will ensue as to what new archetypes are made playable. Blacksmith is the only one that is guaranteed to be in the book, but some beta versions have contained Druid, Fradrengir (aka Nomad from older editions) and Blindi (aka Rogue from the CRB). The blacksmith is done, but the others still need testing IMHO. All non-NDA stuff I'm sharing: Druid introduces a heck of a lot more Alkas, brewing and wood magic. Fardrengir is the first range and mount centric archetype. Blindi is an assassin that deals in stealth, theft and charm (Blindi means to blind). I like them all and I'm working hard with my test group to get as much feedback to Andrew as possible. I also suggested any of these would be very good Kickstarter stretch goals. Even have a high level pledge tier that can maybe choose which archetypes are the bonus ones in the book.

This book is going to be for everyone and not just the Kickstarter backers I hope. I thought I read on the KS site that it was for the supporters. I feel so bad that I missed this Kickstarter and wanted to let you know that whatever you do from now on I will be backing it. This game is beautiful and the runes are beautiful and I wish I had more money but hey tax time is around the corner I will be buying myself everything I can. Thank you for such a beautiful game.

Ooh, I missed the update on the 1st that Content has been finalized, with proofing in progress. That's great news!

I'd send you my money for this book now if I could!

Thanks for the kind words! :)

Denizens of the North will be a general release book. However the original FOTN 20AE CRB Kickstarter backers will receive a special pre-release copy. We will then run a kickstarter for the book so we can fill every page with eye-popping artwork and have a professional editor and layout person add the proper polish. Who knows, if he hit some stretch goals we will be able to add more player archetypes and more content!

Mamama: Gulveig is a new stand alone Viking card game with some unbelievably stunning artwork by Natasa Ilincic. Her style is absolutely perfect for cards. Look for the updates coming soon on our Facebook news-feed!

Aegir: We will be playing up the duality of light and dark (beauty and terror) in the Alfar book. There will be a lot of new mechanics/metas around degrees of light affecting powers (light, shadow, darkness). With this duality we are playing around with reversed rune mechanics. Absolutely nothing is carved in stone (pun intended) but a lot of experiments going on to see how we can push RGS. :)
