Druid: Child of the Stars

Post by dafelsheim »

So, one of my players made a Druid Child of the Sky. In the flavor text, it talks about their specialty giving them powers over foresight. However, nothing on their power boards give them anything that does that. How would you suggest this be incorporated?

LOL here's a prime example of the Beta text not following the test play evolution of the archetype. Besides the Blacksmith, the Druid had the most rules churn during our prolonged testing. Child of Stars had a custom Passive power that granted insights and also had Omens/Portents. Along the way new powers were bolted on. If the player wants a spec along the lines of the description, you can always swap the skills to the original. You can also use the beta Passive power (gone back to my beta notes):

Stargazer
Once per night, you may read the stars overhead. Choose 1 effect: gain an insight into your current quest, or during the next first Upkeep phase of combat look at the powers of one of your enemies.

Amazing! I was actually thinking something along that had happened. We will probably be utilizing those alternate options. Thank you!

This actually touches on an idea I was considering homebrewing in.

How do you feel about the idea of Alternate Power Board choices? I was thinking something along the likes of a Godi Divine Patron mini-board a Dweller could buy as an Upgrade to access a different (but still preset) Power Board quadrant specific to their Archetype.

I know I’m about a year late to answer this, and the thread is probably dead, but on the off chance anyone checks it, here are my two cents:

1. That stargazer power is REALLY cool. As currently written, Child of the Stars is my least favorite subclass of druid, but Stargazer is a really interesting and unique power that would actually make me want to play child of the stars. I also like the idea of giving them omens/portents instead of whatever is on it now (brew I think?), as the idea of staring up at the stars each night to divine the events of the next day is a fun role play aspect. It also reinforces the notion that druids are in touch with Yggdrasil and the universe around them, as they are more aware than most that Skoll and Hati are devouring the stars one by one (idk if that’s official lore, but it’s something that I’m using for my game).

2. Variant class features is a cool idea. Norns is already a very customize-able game, but the drawback to a lot of classes and monsters all having very similar abilities is that it can be difficult to make something feel unique and distinct. It would be a good way to let people put their own spin on a class. It also helps buff some of the weaker classes without having to completely rewrite them, as I did for Stalo, and it also allows you to introduce some the cool and exciting powers from LOTA, DOTN, and other upcoming books to the CRB classes without rewriting THEM.

Out of curiosity, was there originally a different active?

As a matter of fact yes, during beta stuff changed gradually, so gradually sometimes things are missed. We're catching similar stuff in the Chidlren of Eriu right now.

Feel free to create new spec powers for the archetypes using the power creation guidelines in Lords of the Ash (see Valkyrie signature powers).
