So, we were talking about Abate at lunch. There is some definite apprehension about retroactively modifying a rune chain from my players. Some of the questions that came up:
What happens when you Abate an Area or a Multi meta, when you are in the area created by the Area meta or one of the targets of the Multi?
Does the area created go away?
Are you no longer affected?
What about your buddies who are also in the area/targeted by the Multi? Did that suddenly make it go away for them?
What if you all have Abates? How do you resolve who all gets what metas when you are all being attacked simultaneously?

Re: Abate
Yup it would be "retroactively" applied. You calculate everything, then before you start dolling out the damage and conditions, the defender does a Defend action with an Abate. Adjust your attacker's rune chain and then re-doll out the attack info. Yup it could mean that now you're short on range... similar to attacking someone with Untouchable. Since you haven't applied any of the effect yet, I put quotes around "retroactively". You're just adjusting the attacker's rune chain before resolving it.
Yup it's powerful, but a wise attacker will think about the order of the runes played in the attack chain. Put more innocuous things like Maintain at the end.
It's powerful, and it will be a meta that shows up rarely in powers/items.
