power cards in the meantime

Post by raleel »

found a nice little thread on another board with a CSS/JS power card generator, So i massaged it a bit, downloaded some wikipedia images, and put together a sample FOTN deck.

http://i.imgur.com/zKItgHc.png card backs
http://i.imgur.com/JUdAhT0.png card fronts (sample, of course)

i have the tar file with all the bits needed to make it go, but you can download everything but the colored rune images and the CSS for them at http://crobi.github.io/rpg-cards/

I'm by no means a CSS pro. In fact, I'm fairly certain this is the first time I've done any work in it (why in my day, we didn't need CSS! we had the blink tag, and we liked it!). However, if you are an ambitious person and play FOTN, it certainly can make a workable deck. I'm more than happy to pass along my work to others on this front.

I think the only real problem with cards that I've found is that a few of the powers are very long. Dark Juxtaposition used to be my benchmark, but now it's Clone Manoeuvre :) There are a few powers whose meta lines are very big, but I haven't found one like triple Proficiency or something that is unworkable.

The icon in the upper right is from the distribution. I chose ones that I felt made sense for the power type, and thus eliminating the need for the power type wording.

I like black for the coloration. It looks good with the red/blue/green.

It provides the ability to download and upload a deck, which ends up being a json file. This means you can save it and re-upload to edit it later. Not bad for an individual player who may only need to do his first few powers, then a new one once a session or whenever they get some essence.

edit: my tar file here
edit2: the json file to make the sample cards

instructions -
  • Download the tar file (it's a tar.gz)
extract that out into a directory
there will be a directory called crobi-rpg-cards-9395b2a - that's the original top level of the file from github
    go to "generator"
open "generator.html" - that should open a web browser. it works in a web browser, no need to have any other software
feel free to use that sample file to make your own. I would definitely read the instructions on the original web site for things like icons. I'll see if I can update the void icons today.

edit3: updated the void runes for the wiki set. simple rectangles.

edit4: larger thumbnails

Nice find, Raleel. I've found a majority of the longer descriptions could use some trimming up. With Dark Juxtaposition, I shortened the portion about unwilling recipients countering it to the standard format for listing a counter(i.e.[Counter:S]) I turned, "33% chance that an opponent's blow strikes" into, "33% chance that opponent strikes". These and a few other edits made made Dark Juxtaposition fit onto the card nicely. Another option is short hand, but that tends to vary as much as the people who use it do, so it won't offer much help for larger distribution.

Did you make the colored runes or find them online somewhere?

yea, they could do with some trimming :) I'll probably end up making some sets for muggers and wolves and grizzled warriors, as those are the guys I think I would be happy with just pulling cards.

re: runes - both. I found the runes out of FOTN online. I imported them, but wasn't as happy with them because the copy I have is not very high resolution. So I pulled down the runes from wikipedia. Then I looked at those and decided I needed the variant images and pulled those. Then I ran the 1000px png version of them through a program called convert to change the rune color from black to the appropriate color.

I don't have a "wikipedia" rune for the void runes. I'll probably work on that today and update the file.

You can find my tar file here and I'll edit the original and put it up at the top.

We stopped offering the power cards to retailers at the start of this year, so the products are discontinued with a retail box, but are still available through POD sales via Drivethrucards. I just created 2 codes you can use until August to pick them up at a big discount:

Power set 1
https://www.drivethrucards.com/browse.p ... 99e7e64eb8

Power set 2

In the interim of finding out how to get a purchased copy of digital power cards, Raleel do you still have your example files? I'd like to make my own digital power cards to use in Tabletop Simulator for an online game. Thanks in advance.
