Would you like to see us produce Power/Skill cards?

Post by andrew »

A few players have asked for us to create a poker sized deck of power and skill cards (well the deck would be about 200+ cards). This would allow players and the Norn to set some aside for quick lookup. Would you be interested? How much would you pay for such a big deck?

I wouldn't do a massive deck. I'd do it by archetype, at least for player stuff.

Amount would depend on amount of text on the card. For an archetype, and full text for the actives and Passover and skills, $5 probably. That's into the latte range that makes people not consider it a serious purchase.

it would be good to find a way to get your runes on there and yet have them reusable

An archetype deck is still about 120 cards. I'd pony up $10 to $12 per archetype deck or $35 to $40 for all (per book)

yea, that's why I wouldn't do all the deck together. yea, duplicates, but also powers that aren't duplicates, but are modified (Melody of Discord, Apples of Idun, etc). a single archetype is still a big deck, but a large deckbox from drivethrucards can hold 120. D&D 5e spell cards are $14 for 230.

This is kinda why I'm thinking $5 for an archetype. It becomes a casual purchase at that point. $10 is not "casual" for many folks. It's not a lot of money, but this is a player thing - you gotta assume a lower level of commitment.

You could do something like $5 for a base archetype (72 cards, including skills and passives), then $5 for a fylgia deck (60 cards, including skills and passives).

Or give one card of each power/skill and reduce the number that way. you might be able to get it down to 120 with reductions due to skill duplication.

Bro Pendelhaven isn't Wizards... No way can these guys print 10000 units of this to drive down the price that much. If you go distribution to FLGS your manufacture cost should be a fifth or a quarter of MSRP. $5 no way. The best scenario is a price point less than Gulveig I reckon. 20 to 30% less cuz no new art needs to be blasted out. And this survey isn't screaming massive ROI. Pendelhevan cranks out awesome Viking games so my wallet is ready to pay a premium to keep em going.

YES! Any price! Our game group would buy 2 copies of a whole boxed set.

that's fair, but also I am looking at the other card sets on drivethrucards. plenty are in that range.

$10-$12 is going to make folks pause. I'd buy as a norn who makes reasonable income that he sinks into games. If I was a player, I'd think twice about it at $10. at less than that for a single class, it becomes much more tenable.

edit: particularly at the "print your own" option that many have.

I'd say $8 per archetype would be a sweet spot for my group. We would consider a full boxed set of cards if you could make it affordable for everyone splitting it. Say a group of 5 players, $10 a head = $50

I agree with Raleel's assessment of what your typical players and GMs are willing to spend with the GM's cost limit being higher. The most common group behavior I've witnessed regarding product purchases has been in line with it. Generally speaking, players buy only what is necessary. I think one major reason for this is the GM tends to be the one most excited about the product. This person tells their group about it, builds enough interest to play it, and then starts a game. Or he goes out and builds a group from scratch. In this case, players are even less likely buy products, either primary or ancillary, for it.

In both group scenarios, the players often get excited about it but their's is really fueled by the GM. Most often, a group will only see one or two more purchases of a core book. Secondary materials that are game specific are a harder sell for several reasons. A games popularity and exposure to the public have a huge impact on this, obviously.

I'd be willing to pay $10-15 for a full set. Anything over $15 would be difficult to sell a reasonable amount of. The closer to $10 the better. If you decide to offer an option of purchasing them for individual archetypes, you may want to reconsider that price. One of the biggest hurdles to keep in mind is that, no matter how great the quality is, it's a game specific product that isn't necessary to play and enjoy the game. When selling unnecessary ancillary products like that, a lower price point is a must.

yes, please make a deck or set of decks for active/passive/skills.

you could go about this a couple ways: one big deck per book, or a deck keyed to each archetype. the deck/archetype model makes sense for players, but for the norn it gets nutty to think how many separate decks you'd need, so maybe one big deck per book is the way to go.

I've been scheming on how I could make my own but there's a couple issues.

1) it's a huge undertaking. the only way I can think of doing this with any sense of sanity is a database and a mail merge output from MS office or something.

2) even if I build a card set for myself, I cannot imagine it being appropriate to share online as the power descriptions comprise such a huge amount of the product.

so I hope for an official solution as fan-based doesn't seem workable.

in terms of the company doing this, I wonder if you can use a print on demand service?

the overall problem is that we're talking about 200+ cards with a big swing on how many (or how many copies) of those cards you will actually use. one player might only need 8 or so cards. another player or norn might need multiple copies of some cards.

by cost, I think a 50 card deck alone would be valued at 5-10 bucks (looking at Malifaux here), so a 200 card deck might easily come in at 20 or more.

like the runes, ideally everyone would have their own but you could likely get away with one set divided up among several players as you get started.
