Egil's Challenge!!!

Post by andrew »

Today we announce Egil's challenge!

We would like you, the player, to design the best Egil you can. Using the rules contained in the Core Rulebook, and the stipulations and limitations set in the Core Rulebook saga at the end of the book, create the most interesting Egil you can.

Spend 18 levels on powers and skills as all the level costs for all of his available power/skill boards has been paid. Then give the reader a small synopsis of why he is built the way he is, and how to best play him. All builds should be posted in this thread.

We will judge all the entries on June 9th, and award a free set of FOTN:R rune stones to the winner!

GO! :)

Alriiiiiiiiighty then...

I am cutting and pasting the Egil our Norn used in our campaign.

Egil
Level 18 (Effective 21 with Fylgia 1 and Troll Blooded 2)
Galdr (crossed into Skald)
Destiny: 3
Essence: 12
Physical 5, Mental 2, Spiritual 5
Our version of Egil begins as a Galdr, and then moves into the Skald powers to round out his talents. The goal was to create a very mobile Egil in order minimize the probability of a lethal confrontation. With his excellent movement, he can keep the dialog going rather than the bloodshed.
This build of Egil uses a combinations of skills that gives him some insight into what will happen (omens/portents) as well as some heads-up for his interactions (sense motive). Once the chase is on, he uses the scorn pole to hamper the efforts of the pursuers (+2 Diff in the hunt that occurred in our game).
He is ridiculously fast, moving during upkeep and moving after attack actions. His size and his passives give him extra bonuses to move, allowing him to stay out of reach of most melee fighters. He also doubled up on the Stout passive power in order to keep conditions down.
When combat breaks out, he conjures alkas if he draws those runes. These he keeps between him and his foes. The equipment that was chosen was intentional to keep his damage low. Considering level 9 dwellers, he needs to have a more “gentle” touch.
Size: 5
Move: 9 including passives and equipment (11 while affected by a spell song)

Skills
Omens/Portents [2]
Commune with the Dead [1]
Rune: Scorn Pole [4]
Lore: Personas [1]
Lore: Locales [1]
Read and Write [1]
Sense Motive [2]

Passive Powers
Combat Maneuverability
Tactician
Rune of Reinforcement
Die Hard
Fleet Footed
Tactical Advantage
Cornered Ferocity
Carried by Song
Stealthy Striker
Stout
Giant Size
Keen Aptitude (Stout)

Active Powers
Rapid Recovery
Power Over Wind
Beckon Muspelheim
Beckon Jotunheim
Purge Vulnerability
Fire Aura
Fylgia’s Kiss
Apples of Idun
Lunging Attack
Flying Charge
Versatile Combat Maneuver
Analytical Fortress Stance

Equipment
Short Bow: DF 1, Pierce 2, Range 10
Chainmail PF 3 (including rune)
Egil’s Boots (Move +3 and Evade +1)
Fox Fang necklace (+1 Tracking)
Snow Shoes
50’ of rope
Torches
---------------
Disir = 6

Hey all, I love making builds, but for this one I shall take off my “I aim to play this character for a while” hat and put on my “this character needs to be a fun and powerful ally/enemy for the players” sombrero (I’ll glue on some horns to be a bit more Viking-like).

I went with the idea that Egil likes to get up close and personal. He likes to take things slow at first, build up some steam, get carried away and then SMASH. If players do decide to fight him, they’ll want to take him down quickly or put up a strong defense when he unleashes the big hits. The Norn can very easily scale Egil’s damage output during the fight to increase or decrease the threat that players are feeling.

Egil – Heroic Denizen
Level 18 – Troll Blood, and access to Skald, Galdr, and Grizzled Warrior tables
Essence 10 Destiny 4
I’m torn here. The build is more optimal with 3 Physical, 4 Mental, 3 Spiritual runes. Story-wise, Egil makes more sense with 4 Physical runes though. The two troll actives should not be assigned to Mental runes. Apples of Idun should probably be on a physical rune. I’d bind attack actives to spiritual runes and the blocks to physical runes.

Actives
Skald board
Apples of Idun
Lunging Attack
Versatile Combat Manoeuver
Imposing Barrier

Galdr board
Thundering Blow
Aggressive Assault
Rapid Recovery
Cleansing Block

Troll board
Troll SMASH
Smashing Stance

Passives
Troll board
Giant Size Egil is described as towering over most men…

Skald board
Tactical Advantage
Leaping Striker
Combat Awareness
Warrior of Song

Galdr board
Combat Manoeuvrability
Explosive Rune
Rune of Shielding
Rune of Blood
Rune of Reinforcement

Skills
Omens/Portents (He respects Aesir and Jotun as inspirations to mankind)
Intimidate
Drinking/Wenching x 2
Sense Motive x 2
Brawling x 2
Perception x 2

Let’s explain this build a little:
Egil is very competitive and he’s a dangerous fighter when he gets going. This build reflects his nature by offering some basic techniques, two build-up powers and a fun core “trick” combo. When Egil gets carried away, he really dishes out the damage and dominates a fight.

The Basics
Egil is pretty beefy and mobile. During upkeep he can move around and heals a little. He’s also larger than the average Viking and his nifty boots increase his mobility further when he’s singing. His runes and equipment offer pretty good PF, Parry and Evade values. Finally, Egil can block attacks from any direction without penalties.

Egil uses Imposing Barrier to change the layout of the battlefield. Some Norns may even have knockback convert to damage if you knock someone into or through a barrier.

He has two healing spells, one of which is a spellsong (more on Apples of Idun in the build-up powers) and the other, Rapid Recovery, changes his position in the initiative order.

Speaking of initiative, if Egil goes late in a round he can make great use of Versatile Combat Manoeuver and those Cannibalize meta tags. Versatile Combat Manoeuver is as described: versatile – Egil blocks if he needs to, or he just cracks someone’s skull. Cannibalize lets Egil re-use Runes that are already in play to make bigger rune chains – a very nasty effect for Parry-based fighters with Spellsongs.

Cleansing Block is there in case Egil needs to remove a condition effect. Use it!

The Build-up
Spellsong! There, I said it. The Open meta tag is one of the best build-up meta tags out there. It maintains a power and it lets Egil create bigger, badder effects the longer they stay in play. Luckily, Egil’s Spellsong is Apples of Idun, a powerful healing effect that triggers immediately (or during upkeep) and with the first move of the round. Advanced Norns should use Tactical Advantage first when Egil's near full health to avoid accidentally wasting the second heal effect of this song.

After he’s got a big rune chained Spellsong in play, Egil unleashes a Troll SMASH with a few Cannibalize metas to get a very heavy SMASH.

The second build-up power is Smashing Stance. This stance lets Egil send enemies flying. When Egil first draws this rune, he should hold onto it with a Mental rune until the end of his turn so that he can put it in play with as many Amplify tags as possible.

The core combo: Knockback, Combat Manoeuvrability, and Leaping Striker
Every single attack action knocks Egil’s target away from him by 1 or more hexes. Aggressive Assault and Thundering Blow are even better at this too. Try putting an Attack in contingency to trigger after someone moves next to him ;) If Norns wish to teach players to watch their surroundings, they should set the fight near a cliff... Oh right, intro saga. Never mind.

Because Egil sends them flying, he’ll generally have no adjacent foes when he tries to perform attack actions. Combat Manoeuvrability will provide him with lots of free weak moves. Try using a Lunging Attack with no adjacent foes (weak move, attack, weak move)!

Because he performs weak move actions before almost every attack, he’ll almost always get that Leaping Striker’s weaker +1 damage and +2 Pierce on his hits. Clever players should find ways to prevent Egil from moving around.

Speaking of damage boosts; Leaping Striker, Explosive Rune and Warrior of Song plus a good weapon let Egil really lay on the pain. These 3 powers can give up to +6 to Egil’s damage and they're pretty easy for a Norn to ramp up or down as needed.

For his skills, I went simple. They’re all useful and every one is hinted at in his story.
He enjoys a good party. He enjoys a good fight. He’s pretty observant. He watches out for omens and portents. He’s tough to deceive. He’s a little intimidating.

For equipment, try this:
Longsword DF 3, Reach 1, +2 Parry –this includes the Explosive Rune
Metal Shield +6 Parry –this includes the Rune of Shielding
Short Bow DF 1, Pierce 2, Range 10; just in case ~ every time I forget my ranged weapon, I regret it
Medium graceful armour +2 Parry and PF 2 –this includes the Rune of Reinforcement
Egil’s Boots Move +3 and Evade +1 while under Spellsong
Fox Fang necklace +1 Tracking

One last public service announcement: If there's a Mesmer in the player party, all bets are off. I'd sub out the Rune of Reinforcement for resistance to Possession!

I'm not a Norn, but I'd definitely like to throw in my views on Egil. What a great enigmatic character! The sagas portray him as an anti-hero that struggles to balance his ego with his great destiny. He's a very complex individual, and I find that the intro saga portrays him appropriately. Our play group didn't know whether to like him or hate him, and rather than indifference, the group was split in a deep emotional way. Those who focused on Egil's fury at not being treated with respect wanted him lynched, and the side that got to know him during the feast understood the complex history his family has had with the royal bloodline. Our gaming group had a great time with the interactions, and while we had combats with wolves and other undesirables, most of the core conflict remained at a dialog level with Egil. So my build won't be solely based on combat, but it will take into account the out of combat effects that can help portray him as the multi-faceted character that he is.

ESSENCE: 8
DESTINY: 5 (to reflect his massive impact)

SKILLS
Sense Motive- He can read men's character
Athletics- He has an athletic history
Lore Arcana- He is proficient in Rune and Song magics
Perform- He is an accomplished entertainer
Omens/Portents- He has insight into what the Norns have pre-ordained
Swim- He will need it in this saga
Intimidate- definitely!
Brawling- As mentioned with Athletics, he is very physical, never backing down from a fist fight

ACTIVES
Troll SMASH- He's strong and brutal
Chant of Skuld- More destiny and daily omens about the future
Apples of Idun- Since he gets into a lot of scraps, he needs ways to heal
Enchant Flesh- He has an extra resilience vs. poisons (in case the group decides to help Gunnhild and Bard)
Aggressive Assault- self explanatory
Precision Attack- He is tremendously successful because he knows when to capitalize on someone else's weak moments
Bear's Posture- You get even more omens about your future. This build has him seeing so much of the future, that he is prepared for any given situation. To everyone else, he seems all knowing, but his emotions do tend to get the better of him.
Cleansing Attack- More healing and removal of afflictions

PASSIVES
Giant Size- He is larger than even the largest of men
Tactical Advantage
Tactician
Fleet-Footed
Combat Awareness
Fleet Footed
Martial Prowess

I would play him with two driving aspects. He is a legendary individual, and the Norns have woven him into a very important role. As a Norn, I would assume that anything the players are planning would be revealed to him through his omens. But I would also play him as irrational when his emotions flare up. He throws caution and wisdom to the wind when his inner fires are lit, disregarding the most dire of omens. This way he comes across as a very interesting duality. Hope you enjoyed my version of this chap.

The Egil in my game will either be a hero of legend that inspires awe, or a recurring villain that always lives to fight another day. I am preparing the saga for a new group, and the timing of this challenge is perfect. I want to create a build that allows him to astound with shock and awe, and neutralize his opponents when it's time to just rub it in. I want a lot of AoE, a lot of spell casting, and a lot of mental damage. So critiques and suggestions are very welcome! I'll use the same format as everyone else.

Level 18 (Effective 21 with Fylgia 1 and Troll Blooded 2)
Skald, Galdr, Grizzled Warrior, Troll Blooded
Destiny: 5
Essence: 8

Physical 3, Mental 3, Spiritual 2
Size: 5
Move: 9
Focus: +3

I really really like mental damage (hit in-hand), so I will build Egil as a singer who demolishes thought (AoE mental blaster). I also choose a very high Destiny so the rune bound to mental blasts are pulled every time!!! Plus it's critical that he goes first, so Tactician is a big part of this build. On following rounds someone may dethrone him from the top spot, but he will be able to regain it.

ACTIVES
Melody of Discord (blast everyone in my radius and wipe their hands)
Apples of Idun (he may need to heal)
Arcane Shield (for the rounds he cannot fully control those around him, he can pop up some extra defense)
Devour Thought (works like Melody of Discord, extra chance to deal the mental damage needed)
Evasive Maneuver
Ode to Vanagard (a must when dealing with conditions)
Hvergelmir's Poison (works like Melody of Discord, extra chance to deal the mental damage needed)
Snows to Jotunheim (works like Melody of Discord, extra chance to deal the mental damage needed)

PASSIVES
Tactician
Fleet Footed
Stout
Giant Size
Keen Aptitude (Tactician)
Keen Aptitude (Tactician)
Carried by Song
Tactical Advantage

SKILLS
These are all in line with what is expected from him during the intro saga
Sense Motive [1]
Athletics [1]
Swim [1]
Omens/Portents [1]
Perform [2]
Drinking/Wenching [1]
Negotiation [1]

ITEMS
You need to stack as much focus as possible since this Egil is really a Skald extraordinaire!
Egil’s Boots (Move +3 and Evade +1)
Fox Fang necklace (+1 Tracking)
Medium Ceremonial Garb (Focus +1, Parry +1)
Ash Staff (Focus +2)

If the players start to split their hands on Upkeep with some rune chains in contingency, then he may get into some trouble. I haven't test played him, so this is mostly theorycraft. As an ally, he freezes opponents and allows his friends to beat them down. As a foe, he neutralizes clusters of enemies and can then recite a James Bond bad guy style monolog. Mouhahahaha!

The Play
During upkeep, Egil will boost up to position 1 by getting 3 Tactician moves on top of the rune he can play to jump a 4th position. He will also use his free move (bestowed by Tac Adv) to get as many foes as possible in this upcoming AoE. On the action phase, he can use:
Melody of Discord
Devour Thought
Hvergelmir's Poison
Snows to Jotunheim

...all have Amplify Area and Open. If all enemies are in reach he can dump all his extra runes into Amplify (and maybe 1 for Open). He has a decent Focus +3, so it may be to his benefit to activate more than one of those powers in a round. Each activation will add the +3 focus. The Norn need to do the math to see which is most beneficial. So the 5 or so un-amplified Mental damage needs to be dealt to In-Hand for this work well. If he fires off more than 1 of these, he can target the Contingency pile for extra nastyness. The only way to beat this are for his foes to scatter and hopefully go first. Oh and remember the free Area for all Spellsongs!!!

He has 2 heals, Devour Thought and Apples of Idun. If possible, try and keep one of them in an Opened rune chain. This way if you take damage, and lose one, you can release the chain and draw your other one on the next round. I got this tip from a pro at a local con! :)

I would like to get Aura into this build. How amazing would that be? As a dweller it is easy, but as a denizen without an easy Void, I don't know. Ideas anyone?

*spoiler alert*
How I would run Egil in the saga:
Before the reception, Egil will work at setting a great party mood outside. He has the skills to perform and drink, and hopefully he makes some friends (remember to give the necklace as a gift!). In the mead hall, he will continue to use his skills to create a a bond with his drinking buddies while getting Bard to lose his cool. He'll use his wit to ridicule the hosts and the guests of honor, forcing them to act. He should definitely go out to participate in the Vaettir ceremony unless Erik+Gunnhild come along. I'd say those two don't get along. Perhaps the deed happens outdoors. If he has the player allegiance, then he needs to shore up Olvir's support and perhaps there is no real need for flight. If there is need for flight, I'm not seeing how anyone will catch my build (let alone the other one up above by someone else). He'll definitely get away, and if anyone catches up to him, that mental blast spell set will put them in their place. After a verbal lashing, hopefully anyone chasing will give up. My version wouldn't try and kill the pursuers. Once he gets away, I'd have him start some questing to dismantle Erik. The players could join this guerilla warfare, and perhaps cross paths with Erik's biggest foe: Haakon the Good. This could lead a great clash with the players taking a central role.
*/spoiler alert*

Everyone had some really great builds, good luck to all!!!

Guys and gals, that was quite an amazing set of Egil builds! You guys all deserve a great big round of applause! It's a very tough call, as all of them are amazing versions of Egil, each 100% playable in any given campaign of the saga. As we need to choose a winner, I think I will go with Ludologist, since this build is very versatile and comprehensive! Congrats! Stone rune set is yours! :)

1) I didn't see Egil in my PDF of Denizens :)

2) Think I should add Dragvendil to Egil in Egil's Saga?

I second this. I would have loved to see a writeup for both Egil and Rognvald the Sorcerer King. After we ran the saga in the core rulebook Egil became a recurring denizen in our games. In the end our Norn read Egil's saga in its entirety to ensure he was portraying the character correctly. It's a LONG read. I'm sure not every Norn would go to those lengths for authenticity. This is why we love our Norn so much. Now we're doing the saga starter vignettes from Denizens of the North and the world is becoming such a sandbox of things to do. We the players are driving the story as we travel around Midgard looking for high adventure.
