I'm new to the game and am trying out the game as my group's Norn. One of my players made a level 9 Mesmer Seithkona. With two ceremonial knives & light magician's robes, she can use her 3 Focus on the Possession intensity for the Possess Opponent attached to her void rune; going straight to full power Possession with a single rune if they don't have a spiritual rune (very likely if they go before her). At max intensity, the victim can't reduce the status and have no control of their runes once they're wyrded from round to round.

How long does this player have full control of their victim? How many thralls can they control at a time? Is there a counter above and beyond every NPC keeping a spirit rune in reserve to counter (which is negated if she uses Amplify, making it require 2 S to counter)?

Welcome Virgileso!

First thing's first, focus does not boost condition intensities. Focus exceptions are listed on page 120.
So they will only apply 1 maybe 2 intensities if they Amplify (or 3 intensities if they have enough destiny to double amplify).

To reduce condition you go to page 122.

Quick summary in order:
1) Before a condition triggers during upkeep, a combatant can play a rune from in-hand to in-play to reduce a condition by 1
2) condition triggers
3) combatant can take a minor sacrifice to reduce a condition by 1

have fun! :)

I saw those methods of reducing Possession, but from what the condition itself says, those options are not on the table if they ever get to max Intensity Possession (requires outside intervention's Active power). Not being able to use Focus does help matters, but I can see the potential for a Mesmer slapping someone with a maxed out Possession and their Puppet Master seemingly creating a permanent thrall.

4 is harder to get to, but yes if the person is hit with 4, then they must be cured by someone else. Plenty of active powers clear conditions as do passives such as Stout.

It is also important to note that the character does not by default control the possessed character. Unless you have the puppet master passive (which the mesmer does) the Norn weirds to see what type of spirit takes control. As far as I know possession does not have a time limit at intensity 4, unless someone cleanses them, but as a Norn I would say "Until the next time the victim sleeps". The possessing spirit can try to keep the body awake, but eventually the body is going to sleep no matter what you do.

There are several passives that counter possession, even at level 4, and potentially charms and wards. No matter how possessed you are, you still have your void rune to act. But with those exceptions, possession is and should be really scary powerful. There is a reason why everyone burns the crazy woman with all the bones and weird symbols whenever something strange happens and why people will run past the huge berserker to attack the little old lady who suddenly starts chanting and mist swirls about her. Also note that Seith magic is not subtle. It involves chanting and dancing and altered states. Really difficult to hide.
