It's for healing from minor sacrifices.

If you make a minor sacrifice you move a rune from essence into stun. If you do a second one, you do not move the first rune down the wound track, you move a new rune from essence into stun. You can have quite a pile in stun from minor sacrifices. If you have a minor sacrifice +2, it moves two into stun.

So, die hard allows you to recover from 4 runes worth of minor sacrifice during upkeep, as well as heal some.

Why not just heal 4 more, it does the same thing doesn't it?

Heal 4 would do the same thing if you only had runes in Stun. However, if you have runes farther down than Stun, Heal allows you to access those as well. If you only have runes in wounds below stun ( like from a Major Sacrifice +2, or from several major sacrifices), then recover isn't going to help there.

There are a couple of builds that benefit from doing a fair number of minor sacrifices and then make good use of Die Hard to recover. The Galdr would be one. His Rune Spells allow him to change Ranges to Amplifies and vice versa for a Minor Sacrifice +1. If a Galdr wyrds Power over Wind and 3 other Blue (Range, in this case) runes, but has to hit someone only a couple hexes away, he might prefer to do a pair of minor sacrifices to turn two of those Range runes into Amplifies, increasing the distance pushed and damage by three fold.

In my game, I had a seithkona who would use witch blood, alabaster magician, nether pact, and spiritual conduit all together to step up his spells, then die hard and possessed to recover quickly.

A useful strategy with your runes is to see if you have a healing amount/rune that can get a rune into stun, then you can use recover on it. However, it's pretty fringe, since you can't "partially heal" a rune - that is, you can heal something up to stun by only using part of the Healing. You have to move it all the way to essence if you have the Heal for it.
