Hail all!

I was wondering, has anyone used FOTN to run a Germania, rather than Scandinavian based setting? I'm a big of the recent(ish) Barbarians Netflix series and it made me wonder what could be done with FOTN to play a campaign in such a setting. I have recently finished writing a sourcebook loosely based on Germanic mythology for the Earthdawn game line and I'm pretty keen to keep writing books on the subject, if anyone has any advice or experience with the worlds of Germania and FOTN crossing over, I'd love to chat about it.

That sounds very cool! I haven't seen the show, but it's on my radar. I have a planned trilogy of expansions after the Celtic arc is done that heads south for the expansion of the Fate of the Norns universe - Saxony, Francia, the Holy Roman Empire, the Papal states, Constantinople and the Vrangian guard. This will probably include the Volga trade route and the Kiev Vikings.

Hi Andrew

Thank you for the reply! Your plans for expanding the world of FOTN sounds great. I suppose Germania would be something of an ''alternative'' setting, seeing as it would take place in a world that is quite distant from the Viking Age. The biggest obstacle is the lack of sources of Continental Germanic Mythology, like older RPGS such as Codex Germanica, a writer would probably have to crib from Anglo Saxon, Frankish, Gothic and Norse mythologies in order to fill in the blanks. Barbarians plays around with the ideas of Ragnarok a little, but seems to focus purely upon the idea of ''The Wolf'' (presumably Fenris Wolf) swallowing the sun and moon and then destroying the world. It feels perhaps a little more primal and stripped back that the Norse Myths and is definitely something that I would like to look more into. There's a really interesting comparison that can be made between this coming ''Age of the Wolf'' and the symbolism of the She Wolf in Roman Mythology, perhaps to the German tribes, the Romans represent the ''wolf'' of their own apocalyptic myths. Timeline wise, I think setting the campaign in the aftermath of the Battle of Teutoburg would give a good set up, with plenty of social and political ideas to form a framework, as well as some big players like Thusnelda, Arminius, Segestes and Germanicus.

Anyway, I'm rambling. I very much recommend the Barbarians show, especially if you're a fan of the source material. It's far from perfect, but I find it has a lot of heart. Also, the English dub is terrible, so I recommend you watch it in the original German and Latin languages. My project for Earthdawn is a sourcebook called Vasgothia, which I wrote for FASA Games. There's a couple of blog posts about it up on the FASA site if you feel like checking it out.

I love the work you're doing with FOTN. These books are beautiful and I can't wait to have more on my shelves.
