Post subject:  Assorted Questions: Mental Damage and Stances

When taking Mental Damage the rune goes from hand/play to essence first, correct? If you take 3 Mental damage do you take that one rune from play and count essence-stun-wound, put 3 runes from play into essence or put one rune from play to essence and then draw from essence to move it into stun-wounds.

When amplifying stances you only modify the ability effect not your stats after the effect, why is this different for attacks/blocks?

yes. The attacker chooses a pile, but the defender gets to pick the runes. Contingency is also an option there. They go directly into essence (they do not count In-play->Contingency->In-Hand).

3 runes move from the chosen pile into essence. If you don't have 3 runes in the chosen pile, or if you have more damage to apply, the remainder are pulled from essence and move down the wound track.

I'm not sure I agree with your premise, or I don't understand it. Can you give an example, and perhaps how you came to this conclusion?

My guess, if I am understanding correctly, is that you add the effect of the stance after the amplify because it can already be amplified, thus getting a double amplify on it. Also, it is, in effect, a different active power - the runes that it has don't necessarily apply to the other power, only to the Sources within that power.

So given Muspeli Nightmares(3M damage, 2M pierce with area and maintain), how does the Norn deal with 2 players both having this and Tactician in combat to deny the opponent a hand, or an opportunity in upkeep to transfer some runes to contingency?

Stance wise, an amplified Predatory Stance does +2 df while amplifying an attack will do +10 or more damage from the amplify because the amplify on the attack adds in items. It just seems that makes stances very weak.

So, note, muspeli nightmares requires a sacrifice, and note, if it gets amplified, the sacrifice also gets amplified. But the real hole in muspeli nightmares is that it has no range. Use bowmen, and spread them out. They don't even have to be good bowmen. If you spread them so that they can only be hit one at a time, and you have more bowmen than MN players, they will get overwhelmed.

Or you can use a ranged spell. Essentially, don't get in the area.

Note, stances have a free maintain tune, so that's going to apply to a lot of attacks, and it amplifies the pierce as well. It's designed to let that +10 attack be more effective.

If a maintained Muspeli Nightmares is going to trigger in upkeep and you don't have any more runes in essence what happens? Can you minor sacrifice from the runes in play?
